Gatto Piccolo table lamp by Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Flos, Italy 1960s
The Gatto Piccolo table lamp designed in the 1960s by Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for FLOS, who at the time used a new spray coating polymer from the US called "cocoon".
The key feature of this iconic table lamp by architect brothers Castiglioni is the new material used to make it. The frame is metal covered in Cocoon spray-on plastic.
In the United States, after World War II, a new type of fiberglass-reinforced spray-on plastic coating called Cocoon was invented to protect disarmed warships.
This innovative material was imported to Italy by Arturo Eisenkeil, a small manufacturer from Merano, which used this resin to make lampshades and then put it on the market.
